About Food Cartons

These are cartons for food that sits on a shelf rather than food that is handed over hot. Cereal, snacks, confectionery, dates, dry goods, tea and supplements — products where the carton is a retail unit with a barcode, a nutrition panel and a shelf position to win.

The requirements are quite different from foodservice. Print quality matters much more, because the carton competes visually against everything else on the shelf. Regulatory copy has to be laid out legibly. And the carton often needs a liner or inner bag, since the board is not usually the barrier.

Structurally these are folding cartons, produced the same way as any retail carton.

Does the food touch the carton?

It depends on the product. Many retail food cartons hold an inner bag that provides the barrier, in which case the carton is a retail unit rather than food-contact packaging. Tell us which applies and we will specify the board accordingly.

Can you accommodate an inner bag or liner?

Yes. The internal dimensions are set so the filled bag fits without pushing the carton out of square, and we confirm that on a sample.

How do we fit all the regulatory information?

By planning it into the dieline from the start. Send us the full list of what must appear and we will lay out the panels before artwork begins, rather than trying to fit it afterwards.

What finishing works best for retail food?

Matte lamination with spot UV on the product name is a common and effective combination. Foil works well for premium and gifting lines, particularly dates and confectionery.
