Overview

About Drawer Box

A drawer box is two rigid pieces working together: an outer sleeve open at one or both ends, and an inner tray that slides through it. Pulling the tray out reveals the product along its length rather than from above, which is why the format suits pens, jewellery sets, chocolates and anything laid out in a row.

The engineering point is friction. The tray has to slide smoothly but not fall out when the box is held vertically, and that tolerance is set during tooling and confirmed on a sample. A ribbon pull is usually fitted through the tray so it can be drawn out with one hand.

The sleeve is also the largest uninterrupted printable surface of any rigid format, which makes it a good candidate for a wraparound design or a single bold foil mark.

Sleeve and tray can be wrapped in different papers, and the sleeve can be open at one end or both. Pull options include ribbon, cord and a die cut finger notch.

For multi-piece sets the tray usually carries a fitted insert, which is specified around the pieces so nothing shifts as the drawer is opened.

Why this packaging

Why choose a drawer box

A staged reveal

The product appears progressively as the tray slides out, which holds attention longer than lifting a lid.

Best surface for print

The sleeve is a continuous wraparound panel with no lid break, so a design can run across the whole box.

Suits sets and collections

A single fitted tray presents several pieces in a deliberate arrangement rather than stacked or bagged.

Manufacturing

Produced at our Ajman facility

Sleeve and tray are cut, grooved, formed and wrapped separately, then matched. The critical operation is fitting the pair: the slide is checked by hand on samples before the run, because the tolerance between a smooth draw and a tray that drops out is small.

Ribbon pulls are fitted at assembly. All operations take place at our Ajman facility.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Will the drawer fall out if the box is held upright?

Not on a correctly toleranced box. The fit is set so the tray slides with light pressure but holds its position under its own weight, and we confirm that on a physical sample before running production.

Can the sleeve be open at both ends?

Yes. A double-open sleeve lets the tray be drawn from either side and shows a little of the tray edge when closed, which can look deliberate. A single-open sleeve gives a closed back panel for more print area.

How does the drawer get pulled out?

Most often a ribbon loop fitted through the tray front, sometimes a cord, and sometimes a die cut notch in the sleeve that lets a finger reach the tray. All three are available.

Is a drawer box suitable for shipping?

It travels well because the tray is enclosed on all sides by the sleeve. For courier despatch we would still recommend an outer mailer, as with any rigid box.
