Custom Packaging Finishing

Lamination, foil stamping, embossing, debossing and spot UV — the finishing operations that separate premium packaging from printed board.

Finishing is where packaging stops being printed board and starts being a designed object. It is also where budgets get spent quickly, so it is worth understanding what each operation actually does.

Lamination

A thin film bonded to the printed sheet. Gloss lamination deepens colour and adds shine, but shows every fingerprint. Matte lamination mutes colour slightly and reads as more restrained. Soft-touch lamination gives a matte, velvety surface that is the most immediately recognisable premium finish available, and it hides handling marks better than either alternative. Lamination also adds real scuff and moisture resistance.

Foil stamping

Metallic or pigment foil pressed onto the surface with a heated die. Unlike printed metallic ink, foil genuinely reflects light, which is why it still reads as premium. It works best used sparingly — a logo or a rule rather than large areas — and it looks strongest against matte or soft-touch lamination, where the contrast is greatest.

Embossing and debossing

Both use a die to deform the board. Embossing raises the detail; debossing presses it in. They add a physical dimension that a customer feels before they consciously notice it. Fine detail does not emboss well — the board can only be pushed so far before it splits — so simple, bold shapes work best.

Spot UV

A gloss varnish applied to selected areas only. Over a matte laminated surface it creates a contrast in sheen without a contrast in colour, which is why it works so well for a logo or pattern that should be visible only at certain angles. Over gloss lamination it is nearly invisible and not worth the cost.

Combining finishes

The strongest results usually come from restraint: one dominant finish and one accent. Soft-touch lamination with foil on the logo, or matte lamination with spot UV on a pattern, will almost always outperform a pack that uses four techniques at once.

What this includes

  • Matte, gloss and soft-touch lamination
  • Foil stamping in metallic and pigment foils
  • Embossing for raised detail
  • Debossing for recessed detail
  • Spot UV over matte for contrast in sheen
  • All finishing carried out in house
