About Lid & Base Rigid Box
A lid and base box is exactly what the name says: two separate wrapped greyboard trays, one sized to sit over the other. It is the oldest rigid format and still the most widely used, because it costs less to make than any hinged construction while feeling just as substantial in the hand.
The depth of the lid is a design decision rather than a fixed rule. A shallow lid shows more of the base and works well when the base carries a contrasting colour or texture. A full-depth lid covers the base entirely and reads as more formal.
Because both pieces are separate, they can be finished differently — a foiled lid over a plain base is a common and economical way to concentrate the decoration where it is seen.

Lid depth, board thickness, wrap and finish are set per project, and the lid and base do not have to match. A ribbon pull can be fitted into the base so a tight lid can be lifted without turning the box over.
Where the box will hold something heavy, the base board is specified thicker than the lid.

No hinge, no magnets and fewer assembly operations than a magnetic box, while keeping the same wrapped rigid construction and weight in the hand.
Decoration where it counts
Foil, emboss or a specialty wrap can be applied to the lid alone, concentrating the budget on the surface the customer actually looks at.
Straightforward to pack
An open tray is the easiest rigid format to fill by hand, which matters when packing is done in store or at volume.
Produced at our Ajman facility
Both trays are cut and grooved from greyboard, formed square, and wrapped in the printed and finished paper. The fit between lid and base is set during tooling — too tight and the lid will not lift, too loose and it slides — so the tolerance is confirmed on a physical sample before the run.
Cutting, forming, wrapping and assembly are all carried out at our Ajman facility.

Frequently asked questions
How deep should the lid be?
A shallow lid of 20 to 30 mm shows off a contrasting base and uses less material. A full-depth lid covers the base completely and reads as more formal. There is no technical constraint either way, so it comes down to how you want the box to look when it is closed.
Can the lid and base be different colours?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest ways to add interest without adding cost. The two pieces are wrapped separately, so a different paper on each is straightforward.
Is a lid and base box more economical than a magnetic box?
Generally, yes — there is no hinge to form and no magnets to seat, and the assembly is simpler. The difference is worth checking on your specific size and quantity, so ask us to quote both if you are undecided.
Will the lid stay on in transit?
A correctly toleranced lid holds well for handover and carrying. For courier shipping we would normally recommend a belly band, ribbon or an outer shipper, since a friction-fit lid is not designed to resist a drop.
